The European Commission funded, as part of the Horizon 2020 Space Work Programme 2014, a Programme Support Activity (PSA) for the implementation of a Strategic Research Cluster (SRC) in the "Space Robotic Technologies" domain.

Space robotics was identified by European actors as a Strategic Technology for improving the European competitiveness in different space areas. The European Commission set up the SRC "Space Robotic Technologies" as part of the Horizon 2020 in order to enable major advances for strategis key points in space robotics technologies to improve the European competitiveness in this domain. The main objective of the SRC on space robotics technologies is to create, at the 2020-2030 horizon, the tools required to contribute to guarantee the leadership of European capabilities in the space robotics domain. These activities will be developed in coherence with the existing and planned developments at national, commercial and European levels.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is the coordinator of the PERASERA project and the partners involved are: Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI), Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI), Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES), Deutches zentrum für Luft – und Raumfahrt EV (DLR), UK Space Agency (UKSA).
